The great success of Polish students in Monaco

The great success of Polish students in Monaco

After two very intensive months of racing in the Solar Sport One World Championship, the AGH Solar Boat team is back from Monaco with excellent results.  The challenging season for the AGH students was completed in a great style with a 3rd place on the podium at the Yacht Club de Monaco.  The excellent performance of the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge was due to the fifth place in the Fleet Race endurance race, the fourth place in the Slalom Race competition and the second place in the One by One competition.  Especially in the endurance race, it was a huge challenge to fight the high waves, in addition to competing against other teams. The difficulty of this challenge is evidenced by the fact that only a few boats (including Baśka) managed to cope with it – the others were forced to stop the race after just a few laps.  In Monaco, the AGH Solar Boat team also confirmed that they are doing better and better in the speed competition.

The state of the sea also meant that the speed at Leeuwarden (27 km/h) could not be as high as it was at Leeuwarden.  However, also in Monaco, the AGH Solar Boat team came in 3rd in the Top Speed competition.  The exciting competition proved that the real battle is not only on the water, but also in the workshop.  Every detail of the competition on the open sea was important.  It was not without minor breakdowns and damage to several elements.  Fortunately, the excellent preparation of the team and the organization of work during the competition allowed to deal with all the problems.  The Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge was the final of the Solar Sport One World Championship, which started on 11 May 2018 in Akkrum, the Netherlands.  The team then had the opportunity to test Baśka’s capabilities in the Dutch channels in Purmerend, Groningen and Leeuwarden over the three weekends immediately preceding their trip to Monaco.  The most characteristic feature of this part of the competition was the demanding endurance races lasting several hours and taking place over distances of up to 50 kilometres.  In addition to the sporting challenges, the international solar boat competition is also a place where teams from all over the world can exchange knowledge and experience.  The participants are happy to discuss the solutions they have developed and the problems they face.  The atmosphere is such that every year teams from all over the world inspire each other to improve their solar boat technology.

The fairy tale is an electric boat, fully powered by solar energy.  Made by students of AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow is an interdisciplinary project combining people from many departments, specializing in various fields. The structure made with the use of carbon composites technology was prepared for difficult sea conditions.  Already a year ago, in the Monaco competition, Baśka took 5th place in class A.  This year, after intensive work on a new electrical system, drive and control system, Baśka completed the competition on the 3rd position, being the best student construction in its class. Before the AGH Solar Boat team it’s time to summarize the finished season.
